The Ultimate Guide to 2025's Best MTG Commander Precon Decks

It might only be mid-year, but we've already seen a fantastic array of Commander Precon Decks in 2025. This year has been a powerhouse for Commander enthusiasts, delivering some serious contenders across four incredible sets. While most are deeply rooted in the established Magic the Gathering CCG universes, the highly anticipated Magic The Gathering Final Fantasy Commander Deck series brought a unique flavor to the table. We're diving deep to rank the best commander decks of 2025, giving you the lowdown on what makes each one tick. While there weren't any truly "bad" decks, some definitely shine brighter than others. Keep your eyes peeled, as there's a slim chance a Secret Lair Commander deck might drop later this year, and we'll be sure to update this list if it does!

Our Ranking Criteria for the Best Commander Decks

What makes a great MTG Commander Precon deck? While the potential to upgrade commander deck is considered, our main focus is on two core factors: how well the deck performs straight out of the box and its overall power level. These are naturally subjective measures, but we’ve strived to provide a balanced assessment of each deck's capabilities.

#14: Everyone's Invited (Secret Lair Drop Series)

Bringing up the rear is "Everyone's Invited!," this year's Secret Lair Commander offering. Headed by the shapeshifting Morophon the Boundless, the deck aims to turn every card into every creature type, leading to chaotic, all-inclusive victories! However, its complexity and the often convoluted nature of its strategy land it at the bottom. Adding to its woes, its status as a Secret Lair Commander makes it more expensive and less accessible than the standard releases.

#13: Abzan Armor (Tarkir: Dragonstorm)

The weakest of the Tarkir Dragonstorm Magic The Gathering Commander Decks - Set of 5, Abzan Armor explores a unique strategy focused on creature toughness. Felothar the Steadfast allows creatures to deal damage based on their toughness, ignoring Defender, and provides card draw/discard. However, Betor, Ancestor's Voice, with its life gain/loss focus, feels disconnected. The deck feels disjointed and requires focused deckbuilding to truly shine with a proper abzan armor upgrade.

#12: Jeskai Striker (Tarkir: Dragonstorm)

Jeskai Striker from Tarkir: Dragonstorm presents a challenge. The Commanders, Shiko and Narset, Unified (copying the second spell each turn), and Elsha, Threefold Master (prowess), don't perfectly align. Elsha wants aggressive play and multiple spells per turn, whereas Shiko and Narset want you to target permanents or players. To maximize this mtg commander precon, specializing in one commander's jeskai striker strategy is recommended.

#11: Revival Trance (MTG—FINAL FANTASY)

Revival Trance, the Final Fantasy 6 (VI) Commander Deck, features the iconic Terra, Herald of Hope, reanimating creatures from the graveyard, and Celes, Rune Knight, strengthening your board. While a solid deck, it can feel unfocused. To make it shine, concentrate on either Terra's reanimation or Celes's board buffing to make this revival trance guide more effective.

#10: World Shaper (Edge of Eternities)

From Magic The Gathering Edge of Eternities, World Shaper centers around lands and the graveyard, but lacks the power of other similar decks this year. Hearthhull, the Worldseed, sacrifices lands for card draw and damage, while Szarel, Genesis Shepherd grows creatures and plays lands from the graveyard. Both are strong, but the world shaper deck underperforms compared to other offerings.

#9: Scions & Spellcraft (MTG—FINAL FANTASY)

Scions & Spellcraft, the Magic The Gathering Final Fantasy XIV Commander Deck, revolves around casting noncreature spells and damaging opponents. Y'shtola, Night's Blessed draws cards and deals damage with 3+ mana noncreature spells, while G'raha Tia, Scion Reborn creates Hero tokens. The deck is fun and decision-rich, but could benefit from more instant spells due to the complexity of the scions spellcraft deck.

#8: Counter Intelligence (Edge of Eternities)

Counter Intelligence, from Magic The Gathering Edge of Eternities Commander Deck, features Kilo, Apogee Mind, who can be easily broken with proliferation, generating infinite counters with cards like Pentad Prism and Aura of Dominion. However, Kilo isn't central to the deck. Instead, Kilo and Inspirit, Flagship Vessel focus on charge and +1/+1 counters on artifacts. It’s a fun, if underutilized, strategy.

#7: Temur Roar (Tarkir: Dragonstorm)

Temur Roar is the dedicated Dragon Commander Deck from Tarkir: Dragonstorm. Eshki, Temur's Roar grows with big creatures and damages opponents. Ureni of the Unwritten allows you to cheat Dragon cards into play. It's hard to argue with the sheer power of playing more Dragons with this temur roar dragons deck.

#6: Limit Break (MTG—FINAL FANTASY)

Limit Break, the Magic The Gathering Final Fantasy Commander Deck Limit Break representing Final Fantasy 7 (VII), is an equipment-themed deck. Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER draws cards and creates Treasure tokens, while Tifa, Martial Artist generates extra combat steps. However, it feels uninspired, as it doesn't meaningfully differentiate itself from other equipment-based strategies.

#5: Counter Blitz (MTG—FINAL FANTASY)

Counter Blitz, representing Final Fantasy 10 (X), focuses on moving counters around. Tidus, Yuna's Guardian moves counters, draws cards, and proliferates, while Yuna, Grand Summoner puts counters on creatures and moves them when creatures die. As counters have always been strong in Magic, this counter blitz strategy proves no different.

#4: Living Energy (Aetherdrift)

Living Energy, from Magic The Gathering Aetherdrift Commander Deck, isn't the first Energy-themed deck, but it's the strongest. Saheeli, Radiant Creator generates Energy and creates token copies, and Pia Nalaar, Chief Mechanic makes Vehicles. However, the real power lies in cards like Nissa, Worldsoul Speaker and Rampaging Aetherhood.

#3: Mardu Surge (Tarkir: Dragonstorm)

Mardu Surge from Tarkir Dragonstorm Magic The Gathering Commander Decks - Set of 5 excels at what Aggro decks often struggle with: standing its ground against multiple opponents. Zurgo Stormrender creates tokens and either draws cards or drains opponents when tokens leave play. Neriv, Crackling Vanguard exiles cards based on the number of differently-named tokens. The two Commanders synergize well, creating a surprisingly resilient aggressive deck.

#2: Eternal Might (Aetherdrift)

Aetherdrift's Eternal Might may be the best Zombie Commander Deck ever made. Temmet, Naktamun's Will fills the graveyard and buffs Zombies every attack, while Hashaton, Scarab's Fist turns discarded cards into tapped Zombie copies. The synergy is excellent, and Zombies are generally easy to play and synergistic, making this mtg commander precon resilient.

#1: Sultai Arisen (Tarkir: Dragonstorm)

Sultai Arisen is a powerhouse. The self-mill and graveyard strategies are historically strong, and this deck adds Landfall synergies. Teval, the Balanced Scale, despite its name, is far from balanced, netting you three cards in the graveyard, an extra land, and a 2/2 Zombie Druid token each attack. Kotis, Sibsig Champion then plays cards from the graveyard and grows stronger. This incredible deck is our top pick!
