Spider-Man Swings Again: Top MTG Bestsellers Dominated by Marvel's Web-Slinger
Once again, Marvel's Spider-Man has ensnared the top spots in last week's MTG bestselling cards! Commander players can't seem to get enough of the powerful new legendary creatures from the set, and this trend doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Though, perhaps the release of Avatar will shake things up eventually! Interestingly, one card breaks the Marvel mold this week, hailing from Commander: Bloomburrow. There's something about that set that's guiding players toward specific Commander staples. Let's dive into the top ten!
#10 Oscorp Industries
Oscorp Industries is an intriguing way to kick off the list. This land enters the battlefield tapped and can be tapped for blue, black, or red mana – already a solid foundation for Commander. But the real kicker is its mayhem ability, allowing you to play it from your graveyard for the small price of two life. A cheap cost for an easy land drop and a valuable addition to any deck utilizing mtg graveyard recursion.
#9 The Soul Stone
The Soul Stone remains one of the most sought-after cards, but not necessarily the most expensive version. This two-mana artifact is practically an auto-include in any deck with both creatures and black mana. Not only does it tap for black mana, but it also fuels recursion strategies by bringing creatures back from the graveyard. It's a staple for any mtg commander decks that focus on reanimation. Its lower placement on the list this week is a bit surprising, considering its power.
#8 Spider-Sense
Spider-Sense is the standout card from this set, especially for competitive players. This two-mana instant can counter an instant, sorcery, or triggered ability. Even better, you can cast it for just one mana by returning a tapped creature to your hand. Spider-Sense is making waves in both mtg modern decks and mtg standard decks. While it's rarely a four-of, picking up a playset is a wise move, just in case it becomes a format defining card. Keep an eye out for Spider-Sense (extended art) and Spider-Sense (foil) versions, too!
#7 Electro, Assaulting Battery
Electro, Assaulting Battery is arguably the strongest mono-red commander option we've seen in a while, and certainly the best if you're running a spellslinger strategy. This three-mana creature grants you one red mana whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, and prevents your red mana from emptying as steps and phases end. You can also sacrifice Electro, Assaulting Battery to deal damage equal to the mana spent to any player, making it a potent threat. A perfect choice for any mono-red commander deck looking to burn through opponents.
#6 Fellwar Stone
Last week, Arcane Signet was the lone non-Spider-Man card. This week, it's Fellwar Stone taking that honor! This two-mana artifact taps for one mana of any color that a land an opponent controls could produce. While not quite as powerful as Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone commander is a worthwhile addition if you're running a three-color deck or more. Consider it a solid Arcane Signet alternative for mana fixing.
#5 Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade
Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade is a three-mana colorless 2/3 with vigilance. You can tap it to put a +1/+1 counter on each artifact creature vehicles you control. Additionally, you can pay two mana and remove two counters to draw a card. Both are strong effects, and it's seeing play as a potent colorless Commander. With artifact decks and vehicles being popular for years, it's no surprise to see this one being snatched up.
#4 Gwenom, Remorseless
Gwenom, Remorseless finally answers the question: what if Bolas's Citadel was a creature? While we may not know who specifically was asking, it's a very strong mono-black commander. Casting spells without paying mana is always a powerful ability, and treating the top card of your library as if it were in your hand is incredibly advantageous. It's no surprise to see this bolas citadel creature so high on the list.
#3 Spider-Punk
Spider-Punk is a two-mana red 2/1 with riot that grants your other spiders riot, prevents spells from being countered, and stops damage from being prevented. This card is amazing for shutting down mono-blue decks and brute-forcing through other board states. Beyond Commander, Spider-Punk is also appearing in the Broodscale Combo Modern deck. The spider riot ability is a game changer.
#2 Chameleon, Master of Disguise
Chameleon, Master of Disguise is a four-mana blue uncommon that enters the battlefield as a copy of a creature you control. Clone effects are always valuable in Commander, making this a natural pick. It also allows you to pay three mana to cast it from your graveyard if you've discarded it that turn, adding a nice bonus. A great addition to any deck utilizing mtg clone effects.
#1 Spectacular Spider-Man (Borderless)
Spectacular Spider-Man borderless is a two-mana white 3/2 with flash that can gain flying for one mana, or you can sacrifice it to give your other creatures hexproof and indestructible for a turn. All of these abilities are incredibly useful, especially when it can be your Commander. It's also seeing play in Pioneer, thanks to its inclusion in the chaotic pioneer five color legends deck. No matter the reason, Spectacular Spider-Man is flying off the shelves!
