The winds of change are howling through the yu gi oh genesys format! Konami has unleashed the first major genesys point update, and the landscape of this exciting yu gi oh format is about to be revolutionized. After intense battles at YCS-level Genesys Invitationals and weeks of players pushing the boundaries with insane combos, the powers that be have stepped in to address the balance, nerfing many previously dominant strategies while offering a few strategic buffs.
For those who may not know, the Genesys format has been brewing behind the scenes, initially presented in the guise of the Rivalry of Warlords Public Event. The goal was to familiarize players with the unique pace and style of this yu gi oh format. However, the official release of Genesys didn't quite capture the same spirit and power level as Rivalry of Warlords. In essence, you could build a Genesys deck that resembled an Advanced TCG deck, simply by cramming in the most powerful hand trap yu gi oh cards and utility spells without incurring significant point costs. This genesys point update seeks to correct that, pushing deck construction towards a more genesys deck building experience akin to Rivalry of Warlords. Get ready for a deck-building challenge!
FTKs (First Turn Kills) are a controversial topic. While often frustrating to play against, the challenge of crafting the perfect FTK deck is undeniable. This latest genesys point update aims to severely restrict FTK strategies, potentially relegating them to the realm of click-bait combo videos. FTKs encompass various strategies, from inflicting lethal burn damage and assembling Exodia, to depleting your opponent's hand or locking them out of playing altogether.
Many burn damage FTKs that thrived in the previous Genesys environment have been targeted with point increases, making them virtually impossible to replicate in a 100-point format. The hit to Upstart Goblin was almost inevitable, as it was a staple draw card in nearly every deck, competing only with Pot of Extravagance. Upstart Goblin, while seemingly harmless, stifled deck-building creativity. It may even be a subtle nerf to the classic Nurse Burn strategy. The update also prevents the viability of old Gishki hand loop FTK decks as it's impossible to play Evigishki Gustkraken in Gishkis with the new point costs!
The point increases on Evilswarm Ouroboros and Number 69: Heraldry Crest are welcome, as the Heraldic package was crucial for copying Number 16: Shock Master. While you can still resolve Shock Master twice thanks to Eclipse Twins, you'll need to find a way to get them into the graveyard without Ryzeals. Finally, QQ Enneagon and World Legacy Monstrosity have been pointed, limiting the ability to easily summon two Level 9 monsters. The hit to Laevatein, Generaider Boss of Shadows, further impacts decks focused around True King Calamities. You'll now have to choose between Calamities turbo strategies or playing Generaiders as a beatdown control deck.
Beyond the FTK nerfs, numerous generic card changes aim to foster a more diverse genesys deck building experience. Trap Trick's point cost has increased, following Trap Holic's previous adjustment. Rescue-ACE Impulse and Rescue-ACE Fire Attacker, powerful filtering options, have also been hit, though konami MP24-EN278 Rescue-ACE Air Lifter Ultra Rare 1st Edition YuGiOh Card saw a point reduction! Solemn Judgment, Solemn Scolding and Iron Thunder have also seen point increases.
On the brighter side, Heavy Storm, Lightning Storm, and Harpie's Feather Duster have become cheaper, providing more accessible answers to backrow strategies. The point increase on super polymerization yu gi oh is a surprise, rather than Mudragon of the Swamp and Garura, Wings of Resonant Life, but this also affects the Cartesia and Fallen of Albaz branded fusion strategy. Several generic hand traps have also seen point reductions! Nibiru the primal being is now at five points, matching Droll & Lock Bird. Ghost Mourner & Moonlit Chill is now cheaper. Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit's point reduction makes it an interesting choice. Sauravis, the Ancient and Ascended is also cheaper, offering generic target protection. Finally, Flying "C", Retaliating "C", and Grisaille Prison have been addressed. Cards like Reinforcement of the Army, Emergency Teleport, Fire Formation - Tenki, Fossil Dig, and Nightmare Throne have all received point reductions.
Multiple core Vanquish Soul YuGiOh cards are getting hit with points, forcing players to make tougher choices. You might even be able to find some YuGiOh Trading Card Game Wild Survivors Ultra Rare Vanquish Soul Heavy Borger WISU-EN018 or a YuGiOh Trading Card Game Wild Survivors Ultra Rare Vanquish Soul Razen WISU-EN016 on the cheap! These changes are essential for maintaining balance, as Vanquish Soul YuGiOh was being played at near full power. Hopefully with the right tweaks, you can even make YuGiOh Trading Card Game Duelist's Advance Ultra Rare Vanquish Soul Hollie Sue DUAD-EN022 shine. Exosisters, another previously unpointed archetype, will now be more difficult to splash with generic hand traps and dimension shifter yu gi oh.
Generaiders have been adjusted to be less viable with True King Calamities, giving pure generaider deck builds a chance to shine. While Mitsurugi may seem weaker, players were abusing Ame no Habakiri no Mitsurugi for free bodies to make Xyz combos. Preventing Habakiri from dominating Genesys is crucial for maintaining the format's unique identity.
Other popular strategies receiving point adjustments include K9 cards, Treasures of the Kings, and Nohpunk Foxy Tune. Totem Bird and Number 3: Cicada King, the best generic Rank 3 negates, have also been targeted. Megalith Anastasis has seen a significant point increase, and Dodododo Warrior, an easy Rank 4 enabler, has been curbed. Artmage yu gi oh also got hit with five points on Nerva the Power Patron of Creation, plus nibiru the primal being being more affordable is also a nerf to Artmage.
The branded fusion strategy has also been targeted with points on key cards, including The Fallen & The Virtuous and Albion the Branded Dragon.
This genesys banlist marks a significant turning point for the Genesys format. The changes encourage creative genesys deck building, moving away from simply jamming the best generic cards into established Advanced TCG archetypes. The Genesys format should be about discovering unique strategies and approaches to the meta.
While the previous top decks may still be viable, this update opens the door for less popular strategies to rise to prominence. Perhaps strategies like Infernoble Flame Swordsman combo, Naturia Vernusylph deck, P.U.N.K Psychic, Dracotail Shaddoll, Shining Sarcophagus deck, or others will find their place in the spotlight. There's a lot of potential for all these strategies and more to take the next win at ycs pittsburgh! And don't forget to pick up the latest Yu-Gi-Oh! Maze of Memories Booster or maybe a YuGiOh Trading Card Game Age of Overlord Ultra Rare Vanquish Soul Jiaolong AGOV-EN018 to help you in your Genesys journey!
